HOORAY! DEFRA ANNOUNCES CLEANER AIR MEASURES…

and modern Ecodesign compliant wood burning stoves burning the correct fuel continue to be a very sound environmental heating solution.

Charnwood Cove1 - Bodj Products Log Basket

In a press release from DEFRA it stated that “Government recognises that a range of households have open fires or stoves and is not seeking to prevent their use or installation through these proposals. However, action is needed to reduce the amount of PM2.5 produced as a direct result of domestic combustion”.

The stove industry welcomed the announcement today that the sale of coal and wet wood will be phased out between 2021 and 2023 as these are the two most polluting fuels.

The legislation announced today is as follows;

  • To stop the sale of all pre-packaged traditional bituminous house coal (with a ban on loose sales via coal merchants to be applied at a later date).
  •  Ensure that wood sold in single units under 2m3 (loose stacked) must have a moisture content of 20% or less.
  • Implement a national requirement for certified controlled sulphur content and a smoke emission limit on manufactured solid fuels (as currently applies in Smoke Conrol Areas).

Ecodesign ready stoves produce 90% less emissions than an open fire and are a very low carbon method of heating using a totally renewable and sustainable fuel. The SIA (Stove Industry Alliance) encourages the public to burn approved dry wood and smokeless fuel in a modern SIA Ecodesign Ready appliance. By doing so they ensure the maximum efficiency of their appliance while significantly reducing particulate emissions.

Choosing Your Perfect Stove Style – Traditional vs Contemporary

Choosing Your Perfect Stove Style – Traditional vs Contemporary

When you’re deciding on which stove and style is right for you it’s really worth considering not just the aesthetic (although that is REALLY important of course!) but some more practical factors worth considering before moving on to what will look best are:

What type of space are you installing in to? Livingroom, conservatory etc.

  • What type of space are you installing in to? Livingroom, conservatory etc.
  • Whether or not the room in which you are installing also has central heating/ underfloor heating and how effectively it works
  • Ceiling height – seems odd but trust us, it’s an important factor!
  • Chimney – do you need one, or if you have one already have it tested before you install a new stove
  • What kind of  heat output will be needed (KW output)

As an indicator it is generally accepted that for every 14 cubic metres of space, you will need 1kW (approximately) of heat output in order to a achieve a room temperature of 21 degrees in an otherwise unheated room.

Once you have an idea of what size of output, and if your chimney is suitable for your new stove you then are down to the more “fun” aspects!

The style and function of the room in which you are installing your stove will dictate a lot of the stove you chose, also the overall aesthetic of your home will play a part. If you have an ultra-modern glass fronted home with all white surfaces and lots of open spaces chances are that you will want a larger output modern style stove there are many of these more modern styles available now – these examples of the Contura i51 which Contura say “With generous glass areas on three sides and a spacious firebox, Contura i51 is truly an insert for the modern home. The technology beneath the aesthetic hood is specially adapted for houses with modern heating technology that creates negative pressure.”

We also love the Jøtul F481 for it’s “architectural, clean expression”  The pedestal works, not only as a design feature, but also as practical storage space for accessories and logs.

If you have a very classic home or a traditional fire place it is likely that you will want more of a practical traditional square cast iron design – although some of the more traditional style stoves now come in a range of colours. The Charnwood Cove 2 is available in a range of finishes to compliment your room.

If the Cove is still a little more contemporary than you’d like and you are looking for a fully traditional stove which will look classic and timeless there are a number of options in varying outputs and sizes in the showroom. Here are a couple of our top picks. The Classic lines of both the Chesney’s Salisbury (pictured left) and the ACR Rowan Dale (right) offer the traditional stove look but with all the Eco Credentials you need to ensure you are Clean Air compliant even in Smoke Control Areas (SCA).

Fireplaces and Fireplace Alternatives

Fireplaces and Fireplace Alternatives

When you chose a new wood-burning stove it’s not just a stove you are choosing.

We know a new stove is often just one part of a whole redesign in your home, whether that is in a new extension living space, , re-vamped kitchen or cozying up your lounge, all of these installations require more than just the stove itself.

A traditional fireplace re-design brings opportunities for new hearths and fireplace surrounds with a whole range of products available from beautifully elegant limestone to rustic aged oak. A design style that is currently trending is for oak ‘floating’ beam mantle shelves which can be chosen in a range of finishes and colour gradients to suit your specific preference for design style.  Focus Fireplaces have a wide range to choose from including solid wood oak surrounds. Manor House Stoves are able to advise, supply and install a range of fireplaces including bespoke stone fireplaces.  I think we can all agree that nothing is quite as homely or festive at this time of year as a wood stove in a cosy fireplace!

However  the trend in recent years has also extended beyond the traditional “fireplace” design, the joy of a wood-burning stove being is that it does not need a “fireplace” as such, it can be installed as a stand-alone statement piece in a living space. In these designs the flue pipe is left visible forming part of the overall design and the finishing of wall behind the stove and hearth is where you can bring your own individual style and interior design to create a whole new look to fireplaces!

Some of our recent favourite installations have been of this style incorporating new innovative ways to create a centrepiece for your room with enamelled heat shield panels and hearth bases,  to decorative glass hearths;  we have collected some of our highlights from our manufacturers below.

At this year’s hearth and home show Vlaze teamed up with Charnwood Stoves to launch both of their new offerings, these heat shield panels come in a myriad of designs and colours to fit in with any room. From exotic leaves to intricate patterns there is a design to highlight any room!

We have also really enjoyed the resurgence of glass hearths, these specifically designed toughened glass pads offer a modern edge to homes where perhaps a traditional stone setting would not be the most fitting. Often, but not always used in more modern properties, they are regularly teamed with a tiled wall, creating the feel of a static fireplace without the need to build one.

But not all modern stoves are static! There are a range of contemporary stoves that have the option of turntable bases so that in open-plan rooms the stove can be rotated to face either direction as your daily activities move – to the dining table area while you’re eating,  to the lounging space when relaxing.  This brings a whole new design opportunity for the ‘fireplace’ and the expert staff at Manor House Stoves will not only help you find your perfect hearth and design treatment for the surrounding area but also advise you on the building regulation requirements to ensure your final choice is safe as well as beautiful-looking.

At Manor House Stoves we have a full range of stoves on display all of which are SIA EcoDesign Ready meaning they provide much cleaner burn and we have a range of styles to suit any taste and room specification – so whether you are looking for a traditional stove for a traditional fireplace or a modern stand-alone design piece we have the stove for you.

New SIA Retail Group Membership

New SIA Retail Group Membership

SIA Retail Group

Manor House Stoves is among the first in a group of independent retailers to become members of the Stove Industry Alliance (SIA) as part of its new retail scheme.

The SIA Retail Group was formed earlier this year and membership is open to independent retailers with showroom displays in the UK.

The SIA is a trade association for the stove and fireplace industry in the UK. Its members were among the first manufacturers to develop appliances that meet Ecodesign requirements – new standards for emissions and efficiency of domestic wood burning appliances – well ahead of the January 2022 deadline, and positioning wood burning stoves and fireplaces as part of a low carbon, sustainable and renewable heating strategy

Using improved burn technology, an SIA Ecodesign Ready stove produces 90% less emissions than an open fire and 80% less than a stove that was manufactured 10 years ago, making a significant improvement to air quality.

Stove Comparsion Tables

Statistics have indicated that nationally 40% of wood is burnt in open fires -this increases to 70% in London – despite the fact that using an open fire is not permitted under the current Clean Air Act.

Additionally, a cornerstone of the Clean Air strategy is to educate homeowners to burn only wood with a moisture content below 20%, kiln dried logs are ideal, additionally having their chimney swept on a regular basis by a registered chimney sweep.

Rest assured if you already have an older stove and can’t afford to outlay on a new model right now, you will be allowed to keep using it. However, as we mentioned above you will only be allowed to burn certain fuels on it. By only burning wood with a moisture content of 20% or less you will limit the amount of smoke you produce. Coal, meanwhile, has been identified as the dirtiest fuel, and will be subject to new stringent regulations.

We are very proud to be a part of the SIA Retail Group. The SIA is a well-respected trade organisation and including independent retailers as members means it is representative of the whole stove industry in the UK. By choosing an SIA Retail Group member showroom customers can be assured that they are receiving the very best advice on which appliance is suitable for them and their lifestyle. Plus, they will be safe in the knowledge that we can guide them on installation and maintenance, and the best type of fuel to use to ensure they get maximum efficiency and minimum emissions.

Morley Sage, chair of the SIA, added: “Modern SIA Ecodesign Ready stoves are high efficiency, low emission, renewable and sustainable biomass heating solutions their owners can be proud of, and we are delighted to welcome Manor House Stoves to the SIA Retail Group. Membership reassures the public that they are in safe hands when choosing and installing a stove or fireplace and provides retailers with the support and expertise of the SIA.”

Wood Burning Stoves & The DEFRA Clean Air Strategy

Wood Burning Stoves & The DEFRA Clean Air Strategy

There has been much made of the impact of wood burning stoves and that there is the possibility that they will no longer be available after the introduction of the Clean Air Strategy. We are happy to say that this is very much not the case, in fact they will be a large part of the Clean Air Strategy moving forward!

Recent media coverage has, in some cases, insinuated that emissions from open firewood burning is comparable withemissions from wood burning stoves. The Clean Air Strategy definitively recognises that all wood burning is not equal.

SIA Ecodesign Ready stoves are specifically designed using improved burn technologies. Stove manufacturers have developed these stoves to produce 90% fewer emissions than an open fire, and 80% less emissions than stoves manufactured 10 years ago. People using older wood burning appliances can make a significant improvement to air quality by upgrading to an SIA Ecodesign Ready model.

Statistics have indicated that nationally 40% of wood is burnt in open fires -this increases to 70% in London – despite the fact that using an open fire is not permitted under the current Clean Air Act.

Additionally,a cornerstone of the Clean Air strategy is to educate homeowners to burn only wood with a moisture content below 20%, kiln dried logs are ideal, additionally having their chimney swept on a regular basis by a registered chimney sweep.

Rest assured if you already have an older stove and can’t afford to outlay on a new model right now, you will be allowed to keep using it. However,as we mentioned above you will only be allowed to burn certain fuels on it. By only burning wood with a moisture content of 20% or less you will limit the amount of smoke you produce. Coal, meanwhile, has been identified as the dirtiest fuel, and will be subject to new stringent regulations.

It’s worth remembering that an SIA Ecodesign Ready wood burning stovehasstrong green credentials. The CO2 producedwhen the logs are burnt is absorbed by growing trees making modern wood burning stoves a low carbon, low emission, high efficiency and sustainable heating solution.

The government’s own energy efficiency indicator shows that logs have a significantly lower carbon factor than traditional fossil fuels; gas, oil or electricity.
